A corporation may be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit if it spends money on research and development activities. The credit works to lower a company’s Corporation Tax by 25% of the qualifying expenses (CT). A business may seek for a credit that is payable in instalments if its CT liabilities have been offset in both the current and prior years.

A business might be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit if:

  • It falls under the jurisdiction of CT in Ireland
  • if qualifying R&D activities are carried out in either Ireland or the European Economic Area (EEA) and

Which documents are needed to qualify for RnD tax credits?

What paperwork do I need to submit to get the R&D tax credit?

When requesting a tax credit for R&D, the IRS does not define what constitutes “adequate proof.” However, because it is the taxpayer’s responsibility to provide evidence, your company should save as much proof of your R&D endeavours as you can in case of an audit. Some of the records you need to have on hand are the following:

  • Payroll data for personnel actively participating in research and development, as well as for personnel or managers in charge of them
  • General ledger reports that differentiate between company costs and suppliers connected to R&D
  • Copies of the agreements and bills paid to any contractors that conduct third-party research for you
  • Maintaining timesheets for meetings, payroll, work plans, and other events to demonstrate their connection to R&D
  • Design schematics, test results, blueprints, status updates, marketing materials, and any other paperwork that demonstrates how your study was conducted and its relevance

Can the research tax credits for my small business be increased?

The R&D tax credit is available to small enterprises in a variety of ways. Small enterprises that meet the requirements may apply for tax credits to offset rising research costs. You must demonstrate that your costs have grown from the prior year of operation in order to be eligible for this credit.

Up to $250,000 in payroll taxes may be deducted from this deduction if your eligible small company has no income tax obligation. Small enterprises that qualify must have yearly gross revenues of less than $5 million and five years of total gross receipts. As a result, even if your small firm isn’t currently making money, you may still claim tax credits for research costs.

Startups may now use the federal R&D tax credit, even if they do not pay federal income tax, to offset up to $250,000 of their FICA payroll tax during their first five taxable years thanks to the PATH Act of 2015, which made the benefit permanent.

They must, however, have gross revenues in the tax credit year of no more than $5 million and no gross receipts in any of the five taxable years before to the tax credit year.

Rules for Business Tax Credit Limitations

The total of your Qualified Research Expenses (QRE), which might include salaries, contractor fees, and supplier prices, determines how much you are reimbursed in R&D tax credits. Most taxpayers’ QREs are made up almost entirely of wages.

Your tax credit is only worth up to the amount of your tax bill that exceeds $20,000, as stated in Section 38 of the IRS tax law. A startup may not be able to immediately benefit from the R&D tax credit if it has little to no revenue or current-year tax burden. In this scenario, the firm will have carryforwards for unused R&D tax credits, but it will only be able to utilise them once the company is successful, at which point it may not require as much money for an R&D tax credit.
